Essentially there are three types of Capability Statements which are used for different purposes and goals.

  1. One page statement: This is a one page document (can be two sides) or two that is used to open doors to new opportunities and contracts.
  2. Request for Proposal: This is the second type of Capability Statement; Request For Proposal response, which is a part of the response for Request for Proposal.
  3. Capability Briefing: This is the third and the last of the Capability Statement. This is a document that is used during meetings.

Key elements of a Capability Statement

Core competencies: This section should be like an introduction of your company etc. to your existing and future clients’. This section should be limited to 1 or 2 short paragraphs. It should talk about the company’s area(s) of expertise. If the area of expertise is more than 1, then it should be written bullet wise.

Differentiators: This section is all about what make the company a class apart in the market, what is so distinct about the company, what makes it stand apart from the crowd. This section should be limited to 1 or 2 short paragraphs.

Past performance and Successes: This section should show the company’s past clients’, it should highlight the company’s past successful projects. This section should be limited to 1 or 2 short paragraphs.

Certifications/Designations: This section should list the company codes like DUNS, CAGE, NAICS, NIGP, and other codes or certifications as well.

Contact information: This section should include the company’s corporate address, Founder(s)/Executive Team(s)’s name, office telephone (both main and cell), office fax, email address, etc.

How to create a Capability Statement

The best way to create a Capability Statement is to create it in either MS Word or Publisher. The best first page should be the cover page which can be plain. It should contain the wordings “Capability Statement” aligned in the center, date and year, the address, the logo of the company. Another creative way to create a Capability Statement is to have an image rich first page. The cover page should have the brand image of the company wherein contain the wordings “Capability Statement” aligned in the center, date and year, a logo of the company. The second page should contain all the key elements of the Capability Statement. One can either use a “ready to use” template or can create on their own.
